Banners: Toronto FC misses MLS Play-offs (again), Montréal Impact’s fans mock them !
Toronto FC is a football/soccer team that has played in MLS, the North American Championship, since 2007: this franchise has a good success on the stands, as the average attendance is about 22.000 per game, but we can’t say the same on the pitch, because they have never qualified for Play-offs in eight MLS seasons: anyway they have won so far 4 Canadian Championships (a Cup, played only by the best Canadian teams, that grant access to CONCACAF Champions League).
This season the situation looked ready change, because during the winter TFC had made some important signings, bringing to Canada few famous players, such as Michael Bradley, Jermaine Defoe, Julio Cesar (on loan until the World Cup, now he’s at Benfica), Gilberto (a former SC Internacional Brazilian striker) and Dwayne De Rosario (he had been one of the best Canadian footballers for years), but everything has been useless, and neither the sack of the manager, the former New Zealand International Ryan Nelsen, has helped; on the contrary the situation worsened, because the new manager Greg Vanney has won just two games in nine matches, losing five, while under Nelson’s management the squad was still in a Play-off position.
In the second last match of the season TFC had to face its main rival, Montréal Impact, a fellow Canadian club currently on the bottom of the table, and theoretically they could still reach the Play-offs if they had won their final two games and at the same time NY Red Bulls, six points ahead, hadn’t collected any point; that was a very difficult contingency, that didn’t happen indeed, because the Canadian Derby ended 1-1 !
Anyway the bad feeling between Toronto FC and MLS Play-off was alreay notorious in the League, so that, during the match, the away fans from Montréal, that had reached the Play-offs once in three MLS season, didn’t miss the opportunity to banter their rivals, showing this banner: “Google – TFC in playoffs – no results found“!
