Fair Play Award: Carcela-Gonzalez and OH Leuven
Dear Readers, today it’s time to give another “Fair Play Awards”, but this time there are more candidates to win this prestigious prize: Mehdi Carcela-González, midfielder and Moroccan International of Standard Liege, that bought him back from Anzhi Makhachkala last Summer, and Bjorn Ruytinx and Alessandro Cerigioni, respectively striker and winger of Oud-Heverlee Leuven.
We don’t know what Mehdi Carcela-González did in the past to be so much loved by players of OH Leuven, but during the First Time of the match between OH Leuven and Standard Liege (0-0), Alessandro Cerigioni tackled him not very kindly and got a red card, while his opponent had to leave the pitch to be seen by the doctor.
Few minutes later Mehdi Carcela-González re-entered the pitch, but, albeit he was still limping, he received another very kind tackle, this time from Bjorn Ruytinx, that got a Yellow card.
But while Bjorn was still pleading not guilty, Mehdi suddenly rose up and punched him in his face, knocking him out, but didn’t receive the appreciation of the referee, that showed him the red card, but the Moroccan couldn’t leave the pitch on his legs because he had suffered a serious injury at his ankle. Please note, in the video at the end of the post, the very modern “stretcher” with whom he was carried.
In 2011 Mehdi Carcela-González suffered another seriuos accident when, during Racing Genk – Standard Liege, a decisive match for the victory of Belgian Championship, that Racing Genk would have won, a defender kicked Mehdi’s head instead of the ball, and made him faint (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcSJda2BC1w).
We have too many contenders for just an award, so we made a podium:
THIRD PLACE: Alessandro Cerigioni for just an “ordinary” tackle.
SECOND PLACE: Bjorn Ruytinx for a very “kind” tackle on an opponents who had already “kindly” tackled just few minutes before.
FIRST PLACE: Mehdi Carcela-González for his KO punch despite the serious injury.
SPECIAL FIRST PLACE: Oud-Heverlee Leuven for a very effective team work.
