Alessandro Birindelli and the wrong call
We usually write about fair play in an ironic way, but today we don’t, because the main character of the story has already been involved in fair play episodes.
Alessandro Birindelli is a former right back of Juventus FC, and now he is the coach of a youth team of Pisa, and in the past he had retired his team from a match because of a fight, that broke out in the stands, involving players’ relatives, who were attending the game. But FIGC, the Italian Football Federation had to apply the Regulation and awarded a 0-3 defeat to Pisa.
Anyway this “punishment” didn’t change Birindelli’s mind and last Sunday, during a Championship match, his team was awarded a penalty kick, but refused to kick it because there had been no foul according to Mr. Birindelli and his players, so helping the very young referee, that was having a difficult moment. Then Mr. Birindelli stated to the press: “My players told the referee that his call had been wrong. I had told them to help him, and my striker admitted that there had been no foul”.
Finally Pisa won the match anyway, but we want to congratulate Mr. Birindelli, and we hope he’ll continue on this road.
