Preview: 2013/14 UEFA Champions League – Final
The day has finnaly come, tonight at 20:45 CET, 2013/14 Champions League will be playe between Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid.
The match will be played in Lisbon at Estadio da Luz, where SL Benfica usually plays: it won’t be just a Spanish Derby, but, for the fist time ever two team from the same city will face eachother in a Champions League Final.
It should be a very balanced match: in this Season the Clubs have faced eachother four times so far, twice in La Liga (a Atlético’s win and a draw), and twice in Copa del Rey (two Real’s win, but in the second leg, Atlético fielded several replacements because the qualification was almost impossible after first leg), and we aren’t able to find a favorite team.
After winning Copa del Rey, Real Madrid looked a bit tired in the last matchdays of La Liga, and it looked like they weren’t believe in the victory of the Championship, that they could have conquered, looking at the Barcelona’s and Atlético Madrid’s results: we don’t know if that happened because of bad form, or because they were already focusing on Champions League Final. In the last two matchdays, when the Title had probably already gone, the ”Merengues“ rested several players, while “Colchoneros” had to give everything until the very last second of the decisive last matchday against FC Barcelona.
Real has probably something more on individual level, having a lot of aces, who Carlo Ancelotti can manage very well inside the locker room, and who can decide a match with individual plays (Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale, or, via assist, Modric, citing just three names), while Diego Simeone’s Atlético is maybe better in tactical organization and team play (anyway Diego Costa’s bad physical condition can be a serious problem).
From a psychological point of view, Club Atlético de Madrid could be more tired, because they’ve been under pressure until the last matchday of La Liga, but now they probably have to face less pressure because they’ve less to loose than their opponents, who were expensively “assembled” to win this Competition, that would be the tenth, the ”Décima“, that Real Madrid’s fans have waited for 12 years.
If Real had to loose the Final, this Season would be considered very disappointing, while if “Colchoneros” didn’t win, their Season would be very positive anyway, because they had no very big ambitions at the beginning of this Season !
